My Camera Equipment

The images within the albums of "My Ship Images" were taken using a whole range of different cameras including 35mm SLR film and APS cameras. That is why some images in a few of the Albums, have scanned image tags.

My first digital camera was a Sony compact which in terms of flexibility and image editing capabilities, came as a revelation to some one who had been somewhat put off by the costs of film processing.

My first digital single lens reflex camera was a Canon EOS 350D followed by the purchase of a second unit to avoid the need to change lenses in salty and sand filled environments. These were followed by a Canon EOS 20D and Nikon Coolpix P5000 compact.

My cameras and lenses includes a Canon EOS 5D MkII and a Canon EOS 5D MkIII together with a Canon EF 100 - 400 L, Canon EF 70 - 200mm L and EF 24 - 70mm L lenses. I have tried an Opticron spotting scope connected to the Nikon P5000 but due to the nature of the mounting arrangement, the results have been disappointing.

A recent purchase was a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1000 Bridge Camera. My aim was to reduce the weight of equipment carried on every day photo shoots. So far the results with this camera have been excellent with the Leica lens providing good images at the maximum zoom range (400 mm DSLR equivalent).

My most recent camera purchase has been a Nikon Coolpix B700 Bridge Camera purchased for its quite remarkable zoom capability (24-1440 mm DLSR equivalent). The image immediately above was taken with this camera on maximum optical zoom setting. The image was taken from the deck of a Red Funnel Ferry at a distance of approximately eight nautical miles across the Solent from Calshot to the approaches to Portsmouth harbour. The image has been leveled, adjusted for contrast but has not been cropped. Although not used on this occasion, I believe a tripod is essential at the maximum zoom setting.
